Queer Films in the Weimar Era:
Girls in Uniform (1931)
Girls in Uniform is a lesbian film from the early 1930s. It tells the story of a young girl who goes to an oppressive and controlling boarding school. She develops feelings for one of her teachers and later confesses her love for this teacher in front of the whole school. The headmistress cracks down on her and forbids anyone to talk to her, pushing her to attempt suicide. This near-suicide can be felt by the audience and, as many tragedies of the time, achieved the goal of creating sympathy for queer individuals.
Anders Als Die Andern/Different From the Rest (1919)
Anders Als Die Andern, or Different From the Rest, is a queer film from 1919. It was produced with the help of Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld, a German-Jewish sexologist and leader in the first gay rights movement, and offered him a chance to lecture the audience on the “unfortunate fate of sexual intermediaries” and ended with the imagery of Paragraph 175 – Germany’s sodomy law – being penciled out. Although it was removed from viewing by public audiences the next year, by this time it was already a huge box office hit and had achieved the critical goal of getting people to talk about homosexuality. You can watch the film on the Queer Frame Archive’s YouTube channel.
